SANTA FE, N.M. - April 11, 2019 - s4story -- PenPower Book Marketing Services is pleased to announce local author Candelora Versace's debut novel, Traveling Light, has won the Bronze Award in the West-Mountain – Best Regional Fiction category from the Independent Publisher's Book Awards (known as the IPPYs.)

The IPPY Awards reward those who exhibit the courage, innovation, and creativity to bring about change in the world of publishing. Independent spirit and expertise comes from publishers of all sizes and budgets, and books are judged with that in mind. Gold, silver, and bronze medals are awarded to winners in national subject categories, regional categories, and e-book categories. Winners are celebrated at a ceremony on the eve of BookExpo in New York City.

In beautifully descriptive prose that evokes both the sunlight and shadows of life in desirable resort towns, Traveling Light follows the lives of half a dozen friends in Santa Fe and Oaxaca over a feverish fortnight in 1994 as they struggle to face themselves, their complicated relationships, and the dramatic consequences of chasing their dreams.

New Mexico author Sharon Niederman says of Traveling Light: Finally, one of Santa Fe's esteemed legion of writers has, with prose as delicate, well-designed and certain as a Zen master's watercolor, created living, breathing characters who stride the streets and muddy back roads. They are marked in the particular way this place impacts the hearts of those who are called here. This is an accomplished debut novel.

An award-winning freelance journalist for over two decades, Versace wrote extensively in local and regional publications about Santa Fe's arts and culture, expanding her interview coverage beyond the world of galleries and artist studios into the culinary arts, tourism, the writing and publishing community, and business issues facing the growing city. As the founding editor of the highly regarded Southwest BookViews, a quarterly book review journal published from 2001-2005, she brought needed attention to hundreds of authors, books, and publishers working regionally and often under the radar of national notice; for her efforts, in 2003 she was recognized by PEN New Mexico with an award for Exceptional Dedication to Fostering Writers of the Southwest. Her poetry, essays, and creative nonfiction have been published online on such sites as Miriam's Well and Elephant Journal, and her lyric memoir "Making Peace With the Muse" was published in bosque (the magazine) in 2014. She is married to well-known local jeweler Marc Howard; their daughter Sofia is an artist in Meow Wolf's Creative Studios department.
