Novel tackles threat of coastal flooding

S For Story/10362678
SARASOTA, Fla. - Jan. 9, 2019 - s4story -- The fourth novel in author Jeff Widmer's series about a detective turned real estate agent may read as fiction but it's based on the persistent threat of super storms and coastal flooding—threats that now impact nearly all of the country.

Permanent Vacation tackles the financial and mortal consequences of encouraging development in areas prone to flooding. It features real estate agent CW (Candace) McCoy, whose investigations jeopardize her partners, her livelihood and her life.

The novel begins in the luxurious resort town of Spanish Point, a composite of Sarasota and Bradenton, Florida. Sea levels are rising. So is the body count. Both threaten the real estate industry, and its agents.

In her fourth outing (after Peak Season, Tourist in Paradise and Curb Appeal), CW relishes a fresh start—a new agency, a stellar property and a second chance at love. But opportunity turns tragic as she confronts the city elite and their web of deception and greed.

CW knows who's guilty. She just has to prove it—before someone sends her on a permanent vacation.

Published by Allusion Books, Permanent Vacation is available through Amazon, Apple Books, Barnes & Noble and Kobo.

While the series is set on the Gulf Coast, the novels are informed by Widmer's experience as a journalist and marketing executive in several tourism hotspots, from the Sunshine State to Philadelphia, the greater Lehigh Valley and his hometown in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania. He also is a veteran of several powerful storms to batter both states, including Hurricanes Sandy and Irma.

Kirkus Reviews praised the first in the McCoy series, Peak Season, as "an entertaining mystery romp. CW is a great character. Widmer easily brings the town of Spanish Point and its colorful cast of characters to life." And Anna Schmidt, author of the Last Chance Cowboys series, called Curb Appeal an exciting read. "A writer who knows how to put the reader in the action is a rare thing. Jeff Widmer does it with every character and every scene."

In addition to the McCoy novels, he is the author of a pair of crime thrillers featuring a defrocked journalist named Brinker. Kirkus Reviews called the series debut, Mr. Mayhem, "eccentricity at its finest in a detective story." The audiobook version is narrated by House of Cards actor Alan Wade.

Widmer also has written numerous works of nonfiction, including the Spirit of Swiftwater, a history of vaccines in the 20th century, and Riding with the Blues, a behind-the-scenes look at the Sarasota Police Department. His blog about the writing life appears at jeffwidmer.com.
