Retired Oxford don brings personal experience to bear in hard-hitting social comedy

S For Story/10367623
OXFORD, England - March 4, 2019 - s4story -- Barbara Lorna Hudson, Green Templeton College Emeritus Fellow and former psychiatric social worker, sees publication of her second novel on International Women's Day, 2019. In Makeover, published by Fantastic Books Publishing, Hudson explores themes of domestic abuse, coercive control and the constraints of class and educational disparity.

Integral to the book is the fraught relationship between personal shopper, Lucille, and Oxford don, Walter. The ramifications of their meeting ripple out to a wide network with complex and surprising outcomes that Hudson is well placed to talk about. Not only was she an enthusiast of internet dating, she specialised  in behavioural therapy related to marital and family problems when she was an Oxford don, and also worked as a psychiatric social worker. There is something compelling about her treatment of the effects of class and educational attainment, but do these things still hold sway in 21st century Oxford? "Yes," says Hudson firmly, adding, "I know Oxford well. It is the perfect setting."

More on S For Story
I have to ask about the internet dating. Hudson is in her eightieth year as her second novel comes out. Surely internet dating is a younger person's game? "Definitely," she agrees. "I did most of my internet dating in my sixties."

Makeover is launched on International Women's Day, 8th of March, 2019 and is available as a paperback and ebook. Hudson, much in demand as a speaker on the topics she tackles in her fiction, is booked to appear at the Oxford and Hillingdon literary festivals to talk about the key themes in Makeover.
