Independent Chapel Hill bookstore will host local author for reading, Q&A, and signing on November 15 at 7 p.m.
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Nov. 12, 2018 - s4story -- Wisdom House Books, a Chapel Hill-based publisher, announces that local academic and author Dr. Jane S. Gabin will launch her fiction debut, The Paris Photo, at Chapel Hill bookstore Flyleaf Books on Thursday, November 15 at 7 p.m. Held in the bookstore's generous event space, the official release party will consist of an author reading and a question-and-answer session. Snacks and wine will be provided. Following the presentation, Dr. Gabin will be signing copies of her novel.
The Paris Photo richly illustrates the desolation of Paris during and immediately following the city's Nazi occupation in the 1940s, as well as the lingering impacts of the war many decades later. The novel follows a Jewish-American soldier, Ben Gordon, who is stationed at an army post office in Paris just after the Nazis have been forced out of the city. Painfully, Ben comes to terms with the destruction that the German forces have wrought upon Paris's Jewish population. In particular, Ben connects with Simone Daval, a French-Jewish woman whose family was halved by the Nazis. Ben and the Davals are separated by the war, but their descendants reunite decades later when Ben's daughter Judith finds her father's wartime photographs and embarks on a mission to uncover his past.

Dr. Jane S. Gabin graduated from Queens College with a degree in English and went on to earn her Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She has taught at the New York University School of Professional Studies, Meredith College, and Queens College. She also has extensive experience as an admissions director and counselor. Most recently, Dr. Gabin has taught at Duke University's Osher Lifelong Learning Institute. She has previously published several academic books, but The Paris Photo is her first novel, inspired by her father's own collection of photographs from his service in France during World War II.
Sure to appeal to fans of World War II stories like All the Light We Cannot See and The Nightingale, The Paris Photo blends historical fact, romance, adventure, and illustrative characterization, creating a beautiful ode to Paris as a city of both beauty and historical tragedy. Come out to Flyleaf on Thursday, November 15 to hear Dr. Jane S. Gabin read from her impressive debut.
