"Triumph in the Trenches" Named Finalist in Next Generation Indie Book Awards for African-American Nonfiction
OLD HICKORY, Tenn. - s4story -- The bestselling anthology, Triumph in the Trenches: Navigating Success for Black Professionals, was named a finalist in the Nonfiction category of the Next Generation Indie Book Awards, the world's largest international awards program for independent authors and publishers. Published by The Author's Journey, the book is a timely and relevant resource. With more than 304,000 Black women losing their jobs in 2025, it offers a framework for resilience, healing, and navigating workplace adversity.
An anthology featuring 22 authors sharing real-world experiences, each chapter delivers unfiltered accounts of navigating systemic bias, toxic workplace dynamics, and burnout paired with personal strategies for growth and survival. One contributor, Phillip Woolfolk, recounts how a senior vice president demanded his office during a site visit and instructed him to work from the common area, a stark reminder of the dehumanizing microaggressions many Black professionals face.
Edited by Elona Washington, the book sheds light on the challenges Black professionals face and offers guidance for navigating adversity, rebuilding after workplace trauma, and reclaiming personal agency in the face of systemic inequities.

"We can't always control our environment, but we can build the tools to survive and rise," said Washington. "This book was created to give people hope, strategy, and support."
The Green Book for Black Professionals
The cover's bold green color is a tribute to Victor Hugo Green's "Negro Motorist Green Book," which was published from 1936 to 1966 to help Black travelers find safe lodging and services during segregation. Just as that guide helped people navigate hostile territory, Triumph in the Trenches serves as a modern-day guidebook for Black professionals facing workplace adversity.
The anthology likens its contributors to Civil War-era scouts who used hot air balloons for aerial reconnaissance, offering readers an elevated vantage point to:
Following its initial success, Volume 2 was released in February 2025, continuing the mission to amplify real voices and lived truths. Volume 3 is currently in development, with co-author recruitment underway for a February 2026 release.
