MANHATTAN, N.Y. - s4story -- New York-based conceptual artist Roland de Fries will lead, a three-day, in-person workshop on Conceptual Art at the Art Students League of New York, September 28–30, 2026.

The workshop will offer artists and students valuable, hands-on techniques for understanding, approaching, and making conceptual art—beginning with the development of an idea and exploring how that idea can take visual form.

The setting is particularly fitting: For over 150 years, the Art Students League has been home to generations of American artists; among those who studied at the League are Robert Rauschenberg, Cy Twombly, and James Rosenquist—artists whose work helped reshape contemporary art and whose names continue to carry enormous influence today.

"Conceptual art doesn't begin with deciding what something should look like," says de Fries. "It begins with discovering what you actually want to say. The challenge—and the exciting part—is finding the visual language and imagery that' allows the idea to become the work."

ABOUT ROLAND DE FRIES

Roland de Fries is a New York-based conceptual painter whose work examines contemporary culture, identity, consumer desire, and relationships of physical objects and digital imagery. Drawing on his background in design and branding, his paintings combine traditional technique with the imagery and visual codes of contemporary life. His work is held in private collections internationally, and he exhibits in New York, at Art Miami, and abroad.
