BCOP celebrates 80 years of supporting older people in Birmingham
S For Story/10687329
BIRMINGHAM, U.K. - s4story -- Birmingham charity BCOP is celebrating 80 years of supporting older people across the city, marking the milestone with a year-long programme of fundraising events to support people living with dementia.
Founded in May 1946, originally as the Birmingham Council for Old People, BCOP was established by local social workers responding to the challenges older people faced in the aftermath of the Second World War. Over the past eight decades the charity has grown to provide nursing care, supported housing and community services for older people across Birmingham.
Throughout its history, BCOP has pioneered services designed to improve later life. The organisation opened the first day centre in the country in 1955, launched Birmingham's first Meals on Wheels service in 1961, and opened the UK's first Over 60s Centre in Balsall Heath in 1965.
Today BCOP operates nursing homes and housing schemes across the city, continuing its mission to help people live the best version of their later life.

To mark its 80th anniversary year, BCOP is fundraising to create two new reminiscence "sensory streets" for people living with dementia at Neville Williams House in Selly Park and Anita Stone Court in Moseley. These specially designed environments help residents reconnect with familiar sights, sounds and memories, supporting wellbeing and meaningful engagement.
A range of events and fundraising activities will take place throughout the year, bringing together residents, families, staff and the wider community to celebrate BCOP's history while supporting future projects.
Helen Gore, CEO said: "Reaching our 80th anniversary is a wonderful milestone for BCOP. For eight decades we have been part of Birmingham's communities, supporting older people with dignity, compassion and innovation. Our anniversary fundraising campaign will help us create new sensory streets that provide comfort and meaningful engagement for people living with dementia."
