Starks, has been nominated for a 2021 Author Academy Award, an honor bestowed for literary merit and publishing excellence in the writing and publishing industry.

Down but Not Out: My Journey with Chronic Kidney Disease book is up for an award in the Religious Non-Fiction category. The book chronicles Starks' journey from diagnosis with Chronic Kidney Disease through divorce, outcomes that the doctor's thought could not happen, faith, determination and a will to live. She is very transparent and relatable, speaks in layman terms and explains many unfamiliar renal terms.
