Breaking the Silence: New Children's Book "Bad Secrets" Empowers Families to Talk About Abuse and Protect the Next Generation
LANCASTER, Pa. - s4story -- Author, survivor, and child safety advocate Alpa Patel has released a powerful new children's book titled Bad Secrets, now available on Amazon and through her platform Alpa's Voice. The book, which recently hit #1 on Amazon's "Children's Safety Books" list, is being praised for its age-appropriate, empowering message about body safety, boundaries, and breaking the silence around child sexual abuse.
But Bad Secrets is more than a book—it's a mission.
Behind every page is a deeply personal story of survival, resilience, and purpose. Alpa Patel, a mother and advocate, wrote Bad Secrets based on her own lived experience. As a child, she was sexually abused by a trusted family member—her cousin—who warned her never to tell. Like so many children, she kept the secret out of fear, confusion, and shame, for over 30 years.

"I was seven when it happened," Alpa shares. "My abuser told me something terrible would happen to my brother if I spoke up. So I didn't. I carried that silence into adulthood, thinking it protected everyone else. But in reality, it only protected him."
Her world was shattered again when she discovered her abuser had continued harming others, including her brother. That realization changed everything. "I had to face the truth: my silence didn't stop him. It gave him permission."
In 2018, Alpa finally confronted her abuser face-to-face. Her immediate family stood by her, but the rest of her extended family did not. "They called me a liar. They said I was trying to destroy the family. That kind of cultural silence and shame is something many survivors—especially in South Asian communities—know all too well."
Rather than retreat, Alpa found her voice—and now she's using it to help protect children and support other survivors.
