Cruise Safety Attorney Peter Walsh Highlights Mental Health Challenges for Crew Members Amid Growing Industry Concerns
S For Story/10666685
MIAMI, July 25, 2025 ~ Miami-based maritime attorney Peter Walsh is urging the cruise industry to prioritize the mental health of its workers in light of recent incidents involving crew member fatalities. As a veteran maritime lawyer and founder of The Cruise Injury Law Firm, Walsh has seen firsthand the toll that shipboard life can take on employees.
According to Walsh, crew members often spend months away from home, working long shifts under immense pressure. While they are responsible for creating a magical vacation experience for passengers, their own well-being is often overlooked. This has become a pressing issue as public scrutiny of conditions for cruise ship workers has increased in recent years.
"We cannot continue to ignore the psychological toll that shipboard life can have on these workers," said Walsh. "It's time for the cruise industry to do more to protect their emotional resilience, in addition to their physical safety."

Walsh believes that this moment should serve as a turning point for the industry to address mental health challenges faced by its employees. He emphasizes that this should not be a reactive response to specific incidents, but rather a standing priority.
"We shouldn't wait for tragedy to strike before taking action," he stated. "Investing in counseling resources, providing training for supervisors to recognize signs of distress, and implementing policies that reduce stigma around seeking help are all crucial steps towards improving the well-being of cruise ship workers."
As someone who has spent his career advocating for cruise safety and crew protections, Walsh believes that the conversation around mental health at sea is long overdue. He asserts that this is a systemic issue and that there are tools available to bring about change.
"These workers deserve the same level of care and attention that passengers receive," said Walsh. "It's time for the cruise industry to step up and prioritize the mental health of its employees."
