DALLAS - s4story -- Workers who cut, grind, or polish engineered stone countertops are being diagnosed with silicosis at alarming rates, according to recent reports from the Centers for Disease Control and OSHA. Engineered stone products contain up to 95% crystalline silica — far higher concentrations than natural granite or marble — and the fine dust produced during fabrication can cause irreversible lung damage within just a few years of exposure.

OSHA's updated permissible exposure limit for respirable crystalline silica took full effect in 2024, but workplace safety advocates say enforcement has not kept pace with the rapid growth of the engineered stone industry. Multiple states have reported clusters of young workers diagnosed with accelerated silicosis, a form of the disease that can progress to lung failure.
