Framed. Hunted. Betrayed by the Badge

S For Story/10672550
In Rancid Badges, Atlanta cop Derrick Nash is forced to run from the very system he swore to serve—where survival means uncovering which officers are wearing rotten badges.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - s4story -- Atlanta is full of secrets, and Officer Derrick Nash just stepped into the middle of one. He is a cop in uniform, but he finds himself locked in a jail cell like a street criminal. Drugs and money have gone missing from evidence, and guess who they pin it on? The guy who actually cares about justice.

In Rancid Badges, Nash is accused of theft, ambushed in the police parking lot, and warned not to trust anyone. He has no choice but to run. Every time he tries to clear his name, the trail twists, the danger grows, and the bullets fly.

The story starts with Nash being sprung from a cell by his lieutenant, Stan Barnhill. Within minutes, Barnhill is shot down in front of him, and his dying words say it all: "Don't trust anyone." From that point forward, Nash is dodging both criminals and cops. He cannot tell the difference between the two.

Nash is not alone, though. He finds himself working with Kristi Jackson, a woman with her own reasons to doubt the police. Her husband was murdered, and she thinks cops had a hand in it. Together, Nash and Kristi try to untangle the mess, one step ahead of both dirty officers and hired guns.

Every page carries the question: Who can you trust when the people sworn to protect the city may be the same ones poisoning it? Nash digs into the case of Frank Jackson's murder, learns about his own colleagues' ties to drugs and money, and faces down officers with "rancid badges."

What sets Rancid Badges apart is the voice. The action is sharp, the stakes are high, and yet the humor slips in at just the right time. Even in the middle of gunfire, Nash notices how absurd the world around him can be. A woman stops at a stop sign and calls him paranoid. His informant runs like a track star the second he shows up. Nash takes the punches, the shots, and the sarcasm in equal measure.
