ENFIELD, Conn. - s4story -- A new definitive book on the birth and death of the Hazard Powder Company of Enfield, Connecticut was released on June 1st by Enfield Publishing.
Founded in 1835 by the Loomis Brothers of Suffield and Allen Andrews Denslow of New Haven, the gunpowder mill grew to challenge the Dupont Company for supremacy in the explosives industry.
Augustus George Hazard, of the Rhode Island Hazards, purchased the mill from the founders in 1843 and expanded the site. Under his direction they successfully marketed the powder both nationally and internationally, at times to opposing parties of the same war.

After his untimely passing in 1868, and lacking heirs due to their deaths from explosions at the powder site, his rival DuPont purchased the site and increased production while decreasing maintenance.
Tired and worn out, the mill nearly vaporized in 1913, destroying parts of the nearby town of Hazardville and drawing in the curious from as far away as Hartford and Springfield..
