Honouring the past, building for the future: BCOP celebrates 80 years of memories
S For Story/10690976
BIRMINGHAM, U.K. - s4story -- Birmingham-based charity BCOP is marking its 80th anniversary by celebrating the memories of the people it supports — while fundraising to create innovative new spaces designed to bring the past to life for future generations.
At Neville Williams House and across its care homes, reminiscence sessions form a regular part of daily life. Residents are encouraged to share their life stories using familiar objects, photographs and music — sparking conversations about childhood, wartime experiences, working lives and family.
This year, BCOP is placing a special focus on the 1940s, a defining decade for many of its residents.
Stories shared include memories of air-raid shelters, VE Day street parties and childhood celebrations during wartime. One resident recalled an incendiary bomb landing in her back garden, while another remembered the excitement of a birthday party, complete with sweets hidden in an orchard.
Others reflected on their working lives in Birmingham, including roles in retail, care and skilled trades. One resident worked as a window dresser at Werff Brothers, a well-known ladies' fashion chain in the city, creating eye-catching displays that brought shop windows to life.

These personal stories are now inspiring BCOP's latest fundraising campaign.
The charity is raising funds to develop new reminiscence 'sensory streets' at Neville Williams House and Anita Stone Court. These immersive environments will recreate familiar scenes from the past, helping residents — particularly those living with dementia — to reconnect with their memories and experiences.
Helen Gore, CEO explains "Every person we support has a lifetime of memories and experiences. Our reminiscence work helps bring those stories to life, supporting wellbeing and connection. As we celebrate 80 years of BCOP, we are proud to be investing in spaces that will ensure those memories continue to be shared for years to come."
BCOP has been supporting older people in Birmingham for eight decades, providing nursing care, housing and community services. The anniversary year will include a program of events and fundraising activities to support the sensory street initiative.
Members of the public are encouraged to support the campaign by donating via BCOP's JustGiving page: https:www.justgiving.com/page/bcop or by undertaking a fundraising or sponsored event on BCOP's behalf.
