International Cat Caregivers Day Launches February 4 During National Cat Health Month

A new awareness observance highlights caregiving as an act of gratitude, honoring senior and chronically ill cats while they are still living full lives.
SAN FRANCISCO - s4story -- A new awareness observance, International Cat Caregivers Day, will be recognized on February 4, honoring the profound bond between cats and the humans who care for them—particularly senior cats, chronically ill cats, and special-needs cats.
The observance launches during National Cat Health Month, making February a timely moment to spotlight feline health, cat aging, chronic illness care, and quality of life for cats. Winter months often bring increased challenges for senior cats, including mobility changes, hydration concerns, and the progression of age-related conditions, underscoring the importance of attentive, compassionate cat caregiving.
International Cat Caregivers Day was created to recognize caregiving not as obligation, but as an act of gratitude—a continuation of the love, trust, and companionship cats give over the course of their lives. The day centers cats first, honoring the years of quiet presence and emotional connection they offer, while acknowledging caregiving as a meaningful way to give that love back.

Unlike broader cat awareness days that focus on adoption or general appreciation, International Cat Caregivers Day specifically acknowledges the emotional and practical realities of caring for cats through illness, aging, and end-of-life stages. It also seeks to elevate cultural understanding of cats as emotionally significant companions, affirming that the human–cat bond is deep, reciprocal, and deserving of respect.
"Cats give us years of companionship and comfort," said Micha, founder of International Cat Caregivers Day and Pooka's PurrHouse Cat Rescue. "This day is about honoring them while they are still here—choosing presence, supporting quality of life, and recognizing caregiving as a form of gratitude."
The inaugural observance is dedicated to Fiona, a 17½-year-old senior cat living successfully with stage 3 chronic kidney disease (CKD). Her story reflects the heart of the day's mission: prioritizing comfort, dignity, and presence, and honoring cats in real time—not only in memory.
