Irvine's Bigfork Bay Music Reinvents the Independent Record Label by Owning the Song, Not Signing the Artist
S For Story/10695536
A fully independent, multi-genre label that pays artists upfront, owns its masters, and has won international awards while working with talent on four continents.
IRVINE, Calif. - s4story -- Bigfork Bay Music LLC is a fully independent record label built on a new model: it signs no artists. The label creates and produces its own songs, owns every composition and master, and pays its performers and engineers upfront. The result is a catalog of clean, sync-ready recordings made entirely outside the major-label system.
The model removes what burdens musicians in traditional deals. Contributors are paid on delivery instead of waiting on fractions-of-a-cent streaming royalties, with no advances to recoup and no studio or video costs billed back to them. The label even absorbs the cost of entering their work in award programs.
The approach is working. Bigfork Bay has engaged artists on four continents and won honors at the 2026 New Age Notes Radio Music Awards, including Best Music Video, plus five awards at the 2026 World Entertainment Awards, along with two 2025 nominations at the Hollywood Independent Music Awards. Its collaborators include acclaimed sound engineer Jennifer Ortiz, who holds a Recording Academy certificate for her immersive work on a 2025 Grammy-winning track.

"We bet on the song, not the signing," said founder Scott R. Hansen. "We hire the best player for each track wherever that person lives, we pay them upfront, and we keep what we make. The asset is the music and the rights behind it."
Hansen, a voting member of the Recording Academy and an alumnus of the top-tier European business school HEC Paris, brings a background in intellectual property to the label. Run from Irvine and named for Bigfork, Montana, where Hansen recorded an album, Bigfork Bay spans classical, new age, Latin, jazz, flamenco, and Afropop. Every release, with listening links and music videos, is at www.bigforkbaymusic.com.
