Lab-Grown Eggs and Sperm Research Advances

S For Story/10688553
LONDON - s4story -- Research into in-vitro gametogenesis (IVG), the laboratory creation of human eggs and sperm from reprogrammed adult cells, is progressing at a pace that is attracting significant attention across the reproductive medicine sector globally.

Professor Katsuhiko Hayashi of the University of Osaka has indicated that viable lab-grown human gametes could be achievable within the next decade. Researchers at the University of Kyoto and commercial organisations including Conception Biosciences are contributing to parallel programmes of work in this field.

Cryolab Ltd, a UK-based specialist supplier of cryogenic storage IVF equipment and fertility consumables with over two decades of experience supporting IVF clinics across the country, is monitoring these developments closely.

A spokesperson for Cryolab commented: "IVG represents a genuinely significant direction in reproductive science. It would change how eggs and sperm are created. It would not change the central importance of embryo cryopreservation, cryogenic storage, and vitrification within the fertility pathway. If anything, wider access to fertility treatment options increases the importance of reliable, high-quality storage infrastructure."

Current UK regulations do not permit the use of lab-grown gametes in clinical fertility treatment. Any future clinical application would require new legislation and extensive safety evidence. IVG is not an imminent clinical development, but it is one the sector is right to engage with now.
