The D.C.-based artist brings his latest project to one of jazz's most prestigious venues
WASHINGTON - s4story -- Washington, D.C.-based saxophonist, composer, and music educator BJ Simmons continues to strike a powerful balance between artistry and impact. This month, he'll take the stage at the legendary Blues Alley on Monday, October 20, 2025, bringing his genre-bending album Trapped In to one of the region's most revered jazz venues.
Produced and released under Simmons' own label, Jimmy Mac Entertainment, Trapped In blends jazz, hip-hop, soul, and electronic textures into a cinematic, narrative-driven sound. The project is currently on the ballot for consideration for Best Alternative Jazz Album in the 68th GRAMMY® Awards cycle—a testament to Simmons' evolving artistry and creative independence.
The album features collaborations with vibraphonist Warren Wolf and Blue Note recording artist Brandon Woody, both of whom help bring Simmons' modern interpretation of jazz storytelling to life. "The classroom and the stage aren't that different," says Simmons. "Both are spaces where you plant a seed of possibility—one student, one listener, one performance at a time."
