New USPS Postmark Policy May Affect Legal Filing Deadlines, Warn Ann Arbor Probate Attorneys
S For Story/10691524
ANN ARBOR, Mich. - s4story -- A recent policy change implemented by the United States Postal Service could impact how postmark dates are assigned to outgoing mail—potentially affecting time-sensitive legal filings.
Beginning in December 2025, USPS introduced Rule 608.11, which shifts postmarking responsibilities from local post offices to regional processing centers. Because mail may take additional time to reach those facilities, documents mailed on a particular day may receive a postmark dated one or more days later.
Pear Sperling Eggan & Daniels, P.C. probate attorneys in Ann Arbor (https://www.psedlaw.com/learn/more/new-usps-rul...) warn that this change may create complications for documents where the postmark determines whether a filing is considered timely.
"For many legal matters, including probate proceedings, the postmark date can serve as proof that documents were mailed before a required deadline," the firm explains. "If a postmark is applied later than expected, it could raise questions about whether the filing was submitted on time."
