BRONX, N.Y. - s4story -- What began as a backyard garden is becoming Haight Ave Educational Farm and Market, a small educational farm where women and children can gather to learn, grow, and build community together. The space features fresh herbs, seasonal vegetables, fruit trees, flowers, chickens, and rabbits, with plans to offer locally grown produce, herbs, eggs, seedlings, and handcrafted goods through seasonal markets and community events.

Future programming will include women-and-children-only harvest celebrations, gardening workshops, English conversation groups, educational field days, and opportunities for local women-owned businesses and vendors to participate in seasonal markets. The goal is to create a welcoming neighborhood space where agriculture, education, entrepreneurship, and community naturally come together.

Located in Morris Park, just outside Little Yemen, the project reflects one of New York City's most diverse neighborhoods, where Yemeni, Italian, Albanian, Bangladeshi, Dominican, Puerto Rican, Filipino, Vietnamese, Chinese, and many other communities live side by side. While the English program grew from relationships within the Yemeni community, Haight Ave Educational Farm and Market welcomes women and children from all backgrounds.

Maddox has begun conversations with members of Bronx Community Board 11 and hopes to develop future partnerships with community organizations, including the Bronx Muslim Center and the Yemeni Business Association, as the project continues to grow.

"For fifteen years, my classroom was inside a school building," Maddox said. "Today it's a garden, a kitchen table, a Zoom screen, and soon, a neighborhood market. My hope is that every woman who comes here leaves with something—a new word, a new skill, a new friendship, or simply the confidence to know she belongs."

Haight Ave Educational Farm and Market is expected to host its first seasonal community market later this summer, featuring fresh herbs, produce, educational activities, and local vendors as the project continues to expand.
