Single Mother Finds Hope and a Home Thanks to the Icla da Silva Foundation

S For Story/10676811
After her daughter's bone marrow transplant, a single mom faced homelessness until caring donors helped her gain stability through the Icla da Silva Foundation.

NEW YORK - s4story -- When Valeria was born, her mother knew something was wrong. Her baby girl faced multiple health complications, but doctors struggled to determine the cause. Eventually, Valeria was diagnosed with a rare genetic disorder and bone marrow failure. Her only chance for survival was a bone marrow transplant.

As a single mother, the news was devastating. Valeria's mom left her job and gave up their apartment to remain by her daughter's side in the hospital. "I moved into the hospital with my daughter," she recalled. "After many, many ups and downs, they said that they had a donor for her bone marrow…and she got the transplant."

After months in the hospital, little Valeria was finally well enough to go home. But there was no home to return to. That's when the Icla da Silva Foundation became involved. Through their patient support program, Adriana, a coordinator from the Foundation, connected with Valeria's mom and offered immediate help.

"She said, 'We're going to help you,' and they did," Valeria's mom shared. "They gave me a deposit for an apartment, and that changed everything because that gave me a start."

Valeria still has challenges, but she's getting stronger each day. Support from the Icla da Silva Foundation not only provided a roof over their heads but restored dignity and some stability to a family enduring tremendous hardship.

"Coming from a single mom and going through all these situations with my daughter, getting help from people who don't even know us means a lot," her mother said. "Thank you to the Icla da Silva Foundation. They helped us a lot, and we are home thanks to the Foundation."

The Icla da Silva Foundation continues to support families like Valeria's, patients preparing for or recovering from bone marrow transplants, by removing barriers that make treatment possible.
