Space Ceiling Installs 3 Metre Backlit Dome in a 9 Foot Church Ceiling in Calgary

Calgary company Space Ceiling has completed a backlit dome ceiling with a printed sky visual for an LDS church in Calgary, designed with Annette Guercio of Aray Design Studio.

CALGARY, Alberta - s4story -- Space Ceiling, a Calgary company that designs and installs stretch ceilings, backlit ceilings and architectural lighting, has completed a dome ceiling installation at a church of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Calgary. The finished dome measures 3 metres across and sits in a room with a ceiling height of 9 feet, a space where a conventional built dome would have been difficult to fit. Project details and photos are published at https://spaceceiling.ca. A stretch ceiling is a membrane or fabric sheet stretched and fixed into a profile around the edge of the room, below the existing ceiling. It can be matte, gloss or printed, and it can carry lighting behind it or around it. Printed stretch ceilings let a design team put a chosen image, such as a sky or a graphic, onto the ceiling surface, and backlighting makes the image part of the room's lighting. The dome is built from Ecophon translucent fabric printed with a sky visual. Behind the fabric, V110 LED lighting at 6000K lights the surface evenly, so the printed sky reads as a bright opening above the room rather than as a flat picture. The project was designed with Annette Guercio of Aray Design Studio, a Calgary interior design studio. Backlit ceilings like this one are part of the company's regular commercial work, along with lightboxes, acoustic ceilings and architectural lighting for restaurants, offices, healthcare buildings, churches and retail spaces. Churches often have one room that has to feel different from the rest of the building, and here the ceiling was low, so the dome had to be shallow. In the company's words: 'The printed fabric and the backlight do the work. From the floor, it reads as open sky, and the light across the room stays even.' The dome is one of several recent commercial projects for the company. At the Rockyview Hospital Prostate Cancer Centre, Space Ceiling installed 22 backlit boxes. For Lexus of Edmonton, the company built a lightbox measuring 5 metres by 5 metres. The company also completed ceiling work at CEFA Northland Daycare.
