Sterling Heights: Summer Reading Kickoff Party is ON for June 16

~ The annual Summer Reading Program at the local library is back and ready to kick off on Monday, June 16. The program, which runs until Wednesday, July 30, is open to all age groups and encourages participants to read or listen to books for at least 20 minutes a day.

Babies and toddlers ages 0-2 can participate in the program, as well as youth ages 2-12, teens ages 13-18, and adults ages 18+. To join, simply log your reading days on the Beanstack app or website. For those who prefer a paper log, librarians are available to help with logging in person at the library.

For every five days of reading, participants will earn one virtual raffle ticket. Each age group has multiple separate online raffles that they can enter weekly. In addition, attending "Color Our World" programs will also earn extra raffle tickets. The program will culminate in a grand prize raffle for each age group on July 31. Anyone who registers for Summer Reading will automatically be entered into the grand prize raffle.

To get everyone excited for the Summer Reading Program, the library staff is hosting a Spirit Week from June 9-13 with a different theme each day. Participants can dress up according to the theme and receive a special code from any reference desk that unlocks early access to additional virtual raffle tickets.

The themes for Spirit Week are as follows:

Monday, June 9: One Color Day - Dress in one color from head to toe.

Tuesday, June 10: Literary Character Day - Cosplay as your favorite literary character.

Wednesday, June 11: Mismatched Day - Wear your wildest mismatched outfit.

Thursday, June 12: Twin Day - Team up with someone and create matching outfits.

Friday, June 13: City Colors - Show your city pride by wearing green, white, and blue, or don your city gear.

The Spirit Week will culminate in the ultimate Summer Reading Kickoff Party on Monday, June 16 from 12-2 p.m. The party will feature a registration prize, sweet treats, a community art project, live DJ, dance party, petting zoo, and face painting. No registration is required for the party.

For those who can't make it to the kickoff party, there will still be plenty of fun activities throughout the afternoon and evening. A "Color Our World" scavenger hunt will take place in Youth Services starting at 4 p.m., followed by a Music in the Garden concert featuring Matthew Ball the Boogie Woogie Kid at 6 p.m. Participants can bring their lawn chairs and enjoy the concert in the Children's Garden. Registration is required for the concert to guarantee a seat indoors in case of inclement weather.

The Summer Reading Finale Party for ages 2-18 will take place on Saturday, Aug. 2 from 12-2 p.m. at Zap Zone in Sterling Heights. To be eligible for the finale prize, participants must register by Thursday, June 26 and log a minimum of 30 days read on Beanstack. Babies and adults will also have their own finale prizes at the end of Summer Reading.
