UK Renovators Risk Wasting Money on Underfloor Heating by Ignoring One Flooring Rule, Says Guide
S For Story/10698017
As the underfloor heating market grows toward $12.9 billion by 2034, new guidance warns that the wrong flooring choice can cut heat output by nearly half — and the fix is a single number most homeowners have never heard of.
LONDON - s4story -- With UK renovation activity accelerating under the government's Boiler Upgrade Scheme, Underfloor Heating Hub is warning homeowners that flooring choice, not the heating system, is the biggest factor in whether an underfloor heating installation performs as promised.
The warning centres on TOG rating, a measure of thermal resistance more commonly associated with duvets than home heating. According to the site's newly expanded flooring compatibility guide, combined flooring and underlay TOG should not exceed 2.5 for a standard system, and 1.5 for a heat pump system, a threshold most retailers never mention at the point of sale.
"We regularly see the same mistake: someone spends thousands on a new heat pump and underfloor heating system, then lays a thick carpet and high-tog underlay on top without checking the numbers," said Damian Krzyzanowski, underfloor heating content specialist at UnderfloorHeating.info. "The heating system isn't underperforming, the flooring is quietly insulating the room from its own heating."

The guidance is timely: the European underfloor heating market was valued at $7.6 billion in 2024 and is projected to reach $12.9 billion by 2034, driven largely by the EU's Renovation Wave Strategy and UK schemes such as the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, which offers grants of £7,500 toward heat pump installation. Underfloor heating can also cut heating costs by up to 35% versus radiators when correctly specified, a saving that depends on the floor covering letting that heat through.
The guide also covers BS EN 1264, the EU design standard capping safe floor temperatures at 29°C in living spaces and 33°C in bathrooms, alongside a comparison table ranking flooring types by thermal conductivity, TOG rating, and system compatibility.
Key figures for homeowners planning a renovation:
