Waterbury Nonprofit Serving Senior Women Since 1898 Invites Local Professionals to Open House
S For Story/10692446
Southmayd Home Opens Its Doors to Senior Care Professionals on June 11, 2026
WATERBURY, Conn. - s4story -- Southmayd Home, a nonprofit residential care community for women age 60 and older, will host a Professional Open House on Thursday, June 11, 2026 from 10:00 to 11:00 AM at its historic residence at 250 Columbia Blvd in Waterbury, Connecticut. The event is open to local professionals in senior care, placement, therapeutic care, hospital care, and caregiver support, and marks a significant step in the organization's effort to build awareness of its services throughout the Greater Waterbury community.
Founded in 1898 by Sarah Donaldson, Southmayd Home is one of the longest-running nonprofits of its kind in Connecticut. Donaldson established the organization after a close friend was forced to leave Waterbury due to a lack of suitable housing for older women. Beginning with a personal contribution of ten dollars and the support of ninety-nine community members, she opened Southmayd Home to its first resident on September 26, 1898. Over 125 years later, the organization continues to operate from its three-story residence on Columbia Boulevard in Waterbury's historic Overlook neighborhood.

As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, Southmayd Home operates independently of Medicare and reinvests all income directly into resident care. The organization has maintained its founding commitment to affordability by funding approximately half of every resident's living costs, a practice it has upheld for more than a century. The home serves women who are independent but ready for the security, community, and personalized support of residential care.
The June 11 open house will give attending professionals the opportunity to tour the home and its backyard Garden Park, meet Director Kara Cunningham and Southmayd's board members and staff, and learn how the organization may serve as a resource for their clients. Light refreshments will be served. Space is limited and registration is required by June 8, 2026.
"Southmayd Home has been doing this work quietly for 128 years. Many of the professionals who serve senior women in our community simply do not know we are here. This open house is an opportunity to change that, and to build the kinds of relationships that ultimately benefit the women we all serve." — Kara Cunningham, Director, Southmayd Home
