100 Word Fiction Releases Issue #2: Forty Stories, One Hundred Words Each
S For Story/10701118
Thirty-three writers, one strict rule, and forty-eight pages of very short fiction from Prolific Press Inc.
JOHNSTOWN, Pa. - s4story -- 100 Word Fiction has released Issue #2, the journal's second print anthology, collecting forty stories that each say everything they need to in exactly one hundred words -- no more, no fewer.
The 48-page paperback gathers work by 33 writers, selected by hand from the journal's open call. Every story is given a page of its own.
"A hundred words is not much room, which is exactly the point," said Glenn Lyvers, the journal's editor-in-chief. "Forty writers were handed the same small space and came back with forty different rooms."
The issue ranges widely inside that constraint. A mermaid sings the sleepless down into the water. A troll under a bridge is handed a roast beef sandwich. An all-night gas station at the edge of the galaxy turns out to stock metaphysical poetry. Elsewhere the register turns: a question about who built a porch becomes something a veteran quietly refuses to answer, and a granddaughter turns away the visitors her grandmother never wanted.
Issue #2 features stories by Juleigh Howard-Hobson, Phill Provance, Jen Mierisch, Elizabeth Guilt, James Rumpel, Marissa Snyder, Milkana Mingels, Vaughan Stanger, Richard Beaulieu, Katja Rammer, Stephanie De Haven, Marie Anderson, Matthew Ployhart, Robert Bagnall, Matthew Brinkley, Arvee Fantilagan, Emily Hoover, Jason Jolley, Colleen Addison, Sara Wenger, Lorraine Rose, Alan Meyrowitz, C. L. Killgore, Mike Lewis, Ting-Fai Yu, Sarah Richards, Robert Baldwin, Mark Rankin, Rosemary Ybarra-Garcia, Arvilla Fee, Robin Lilja, Jeffrey Hantover, and Kiki Novak.

100 Word Fiction is an independent literary journal built on a simple belief: constraint is a form of craft, and a single page can hold an entire world. The journal publishes drabbles -- stories of exactly one hundred words -- and reads submissions year-round. Every story in the issue is also free to read online.
Issue #2 is published by Prolific Press Inc. of Johnstown, Pennsylvania, and is available in paperback for $16.95 (ISBN 978-1-63275-234-5) from the Prolific Press bookstore. As a launch offer, the press is shipping double any order of three or more copies, free -- buy five, get five free.
