Additional Lessons From Charlie Kirk's Murder
S For Story/10671842
Outdoor Surveillance, Campus Venues, and Lockable Classroom Doors
WASHINGTON - s4story -- While there have been endless discussions of what many feel should have learned from the murder of Charlie Kirk - such as the need to tone down angry rhetoric and to promote if not insist upon proper and polite debate - several important lessons which should have been learned, and which more importantly are likely to lead to concrete action rather than simply rhetoric, seem to be largely overlooked, argues a public interest law professor.
Professor John Banzhaf, a former security officer and security consultant, and the author of an international study and report (https://www.universityworldnews.com/post.php?st...) on how colleges and universities can and should take simple and inexpensive precautions against shootings on campus [LIST: 11 Solutions to Thwart School Shootings (https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/washing...)], says that common sense and concern about student safety, and also now the need to avoid legal liability, require that outdoor venues must be more vigilant concerning possible snipers using long-range rifles (e.g. routinely employing drones), especially when political and other controversial individuals might be at risk.

He also warns that fearful universities may become reluctant to continue serving their very important and time-honored function of providing venues for hosting political and other controversial events by refusing to stage many, by demanding payment for any added security measures which may be required, or at very least deterring visits of controversial speakers by requiring them to sign waivers of legal liability - similar to those often demanded of skiers and gym users - including acknowledging the inherent risks which cannot be completely avoided. . . .
Finally, as graphically illustrated by the problems students faced at Utah Valley University [UVU], all schools must finally adopt the simple and inexpensive imperative of having classroom doors which are capable of being locked from the inside, rather than forcing students and teachers to try to construct ineffective barriers made of furniture to protect themselves from being shot in their classroom like fish trapped in a barrel.

He should know and be listened to since he has been called "a Driving Force Behind the Lawsuits That Have Cost Tobacco Companies Billions of Dollars," a "King of Class Action Lawsuits," "The Law Professor Who Masterminded Litigation Against the Tobacco Industry," and an "Entrepreneur of Litigation, [and] a Trial Lawyer's Trial Lawyer."
