AI-Generated Film "Missing Parts" Wins Best Experimental at Canadian Film Festival
S For Story/10599954
VANCOUVER, British Columbia - s4story -- Artificial Intelligence achieved yet another significant milestone after "Missing Parts", a film entirely created using artificial intelligence (AI), was awarded the Best Experimental category at The Western Canadian International Film Festival.
The film is the brainchild of Dale Williams, an AI Filmmaking instructor and creator of the YouTube channel, The Reel Robot. Using the generative AI tools Midjourney and RunwayML, Williams brought to life a narrative that stood its ground amidst traditionally-produced films in the festival.
Williams commented on the win, stating, "This recognition highlights that we're at the start of a sea change in how movies are made. My $10 budget allowed me to produce CGI and concepts that would have otherwise required millions."
The recognition of "Missing Parts" at the festival is particularly noteworthy given the current backdrop of the SAG-AFTRA strike and the ensuing discussions about the role of AI in the entertainment industry.

Rather than seeing AI as a replacement, Williams envisions a future where AI complements traditional filmmaking. "These tools enable AI artists, but don't replace our creativity. We're still writing, directing, and using our unique tastes to make it come together. AI films will certainly be a new genre, but nothing will outright replace how an acting performance can elevate a film," he noted.
Williams teaches AI Filmmaking and starts discussions on his YouTube channel, The Reel Robot. He has also been recognized by the AI behemoth, Runway, by being inducted into its exclusive creative partner program. With Runway's recent valuation at $1.5 billion after securing $141 million from investors, including Alphabet-owned Google and Nvidia, this partnership aligns Williams with some of the leading figures in AI-driven cinematic exploration.
