SMITHFIELD, R.I. - s4story -- A manufacturer of custom aluminum composite material (ACM) panels turned to AIM Joraco® to address the challenges of producing precise, repeatable holes in its panels. The customer required a press capable of punching multiple holes simultaneously while accommodating aluminum extrusions up to 218" long. The system needed to punch 5.2 mm diameter holes through 1.5 mm thick aluminum, with holes evenly spaced 25.4 mm apart along the length of each extrusion.
Using a Toggle-Aire® Model 2530, AIM Joraco® designed custom tooling and fixturing capable of punching six holes at once. The C-frame press configuration and custom mandrel allowed extrusions of varying lengths to slide freely through the punching area without side obstructions. Punching six holes simultaneously increased the force required and placed additional stress on the press and tooling. AIM Joraco® addressed these challenges with a two-post die set designed to maintain punch-and-die alignment while evenly distributing the punching force. The lower tooling was designed as a mandrel that supports the extrusion during punching while allowing the material to slide easily through the press. A toggleable stop accurately positions the extrusion for the first set of holes, while a ball detent provides repeatable positioning as the operator advances the extrusion for subsequent holes.

This combination of tooling and fixturing enables operators to process extrusions of varying lengths while maintaining consistent hole spacing throughout the part. The completed system delivers six holes punched simultaneously for improved production efficiency, with 5.2 mm holes in 1.5 mm aluminum to meet customer specifications. It maintains 25.4 mm hole spacing along the length of the extrusion and accommodates extrusions up to 218" long. By combining a Toggle-Aire® Model 2530 with purpose-built tooling and fixturing, AIM Joraco® created a practical and efficient solution tailored to the customer's unique extrusion punching requirements
