Always Coming Home: a site-responsive installation about what signifies home
S For Story/10694584
PORTLAND, Ore. - s4story -- The Imperfecta Gallery is proud to present Always Coming Home, a site-responsive installation about what signifies home. On view from July 2 to Aug 1 2026, this installation was created exclusively for Imperfecta's installation space by local artist Julie Rall.
Always Coming Home is a celebration of Portland's local places. Using materials such as salt, fabric, retired globes, paper, sticks, and found objects, Rall constructed an immersive environment that reflects the quiet significance of the everyday, leveraging a unique aesthetic that illustrates the layered histories that circulate through human hands and habitats.
The title of the installation references Ursula K. Le Guin's Always Coming Home, a text that informed the installation's inquiries into place, belonging, and cyclical return. Rather than illustrating Le Guin's narrative, Rall engages its philosophical undercurrents, inviting viewers to consider what it means to inhabit the Earth with attentiveness and reciprocity.

About the artist
Julie Rall works with the alchemy of materials to create poetic places. She is concerned with how fluid paint pours, pulls, clumps, and settles across acrylic panels and paper, how materials fold, layer, and spread out over each other and how materials respond to gravity, surface, and time. Julie has been practicing her art in Portland, Oregon since 1985.
