ABINGDON, Va. - s4story -- Authors Release Personal Accounts of the McClure #1 Mine Explosion in VA
Jan-Carol Publishing, Inc., of Johnson City, Tennessee, is thrilled to announce the release of Our Blood Runs Black: McClure #1 Mine Explosion by Marsha Sutherland Self and Rebecca Riner White.
Marsha Self is a coal miner's daughter from Dickenson County. She worked at UMWA District 28 Office, followed by the UMWA and Bituminous Coal Wage Agreement in Washington. Upon returning to Abingdon, she married Randall Self and ran her own business, Appalachian Court Reporting, for 36 years. Becoming an author inspired her to open another business—For C's: Christ, Country, Coal, Children.
Rebecca Riner White is also a coal miner's daughter, from Russell County, Virginia. Becky worked in Learning Resources in Knox County, Tennessee, and Washington County, Virginia. She and her husband, Samuel, make their home in Bristol, Virginia. Becky enjoys Bible study, reading, writing, and poetry.
In Our Blood Runs Black, Self and White document personal accounts of coal mining families and how their lives changed on June 21, 1983, when a devastating explosion rocked the two-left section of McClure #1 Mine in Virginia. Ten miners were working on that section. Seven would not make it out alive. One of the survivors recalls, "I heard a roaring noise and saw a ball of fire coming toward me, followed by wind and smoke. And then—darkness."

The disaster was a stark reminder of the dangers of mining. This book is a harrowing account that reveals, at its core, miners are a brave, resilient brotherhood with love for their job and coal in their veins, making their blood run black.
Our Blood Runs Black is available now on Amazon, Barnes&Noble.com, and directly through JCP's online bookstore: https://jancarolpublishing.square.site/s/order?shipping=true&item=281#14. For a limited time, readers can get the e-book edition for just $0.99.
