'Beyond the Ashes: An Adaptive Trail Story' Documentary Celebrates Adaptive Mountain Bikers
S For Story/10680671
BayView Entertainment film spotlights adaptive athletes and the movement to build universally designed trails, showing how a local effort in Northwest Arkansas is reshaping access to the outdoors and influencing trail communities beyond the region.
POMPTON PLAINS, N.J. - s4story -- BayView Entertainment announced the release of Beyond the Ashes: An Adaptive Trail Story, a feature-length documentary exploring adaptive mountain biking and the growing movement toward universally designed trail systems. The film will be available on select streaming platforms beginning Dec. 30.
Directed by Emmy-nominated filmmaker Tim Johnson and filmed by Telly Award-winning cinematographer Brock Wagner, the documentary centers on Trailblazers, the nonprofit organization behind OZ Trails, a 500-plus-mile trail network that has helped transform Northwest Arkansas into a global cycling destination. The film examines how the region is emerging as a leader in adaptive trail design while advancing the broader push for universal trails built to serve riders of all ages, abilities, and equipment types, and integrated throughout existing trail systems whenever possible.

The film follows a range of adaptive riders, including athletes using handcycles, three-wheeled rigs, and other adaptive equipment designed for individuals with spinal cord injuries, limb differences, or traumatic brain injuries, as they reclaim their place in the outdoors. Featured voices include Brian Carlson, a former collegiate cyclist turned adaptive athlete and longtime advocate; Jeremy McGhee, an adaptive athlete, trail access consultant, and public speaker; and Annijke Wade, an adaptive athlete, community advocate, and co-founder of DirtBound. They appear alongside trail builders, riders, and community leaders helping shape the future of trail access.
At the center of the film is Carlson, who became an amputee after being struck by a drunk driver during a ride. As he adapted to new equipment that allowed him to return to the trails, he encountered barriers within existing trail systems. Working alongside other adaptive riders and Trailblazers, Carlson helped drive meaningful improvements that continue to influence how trails are designed and built.

"Beyond the Ashes is about more than trails," Johnson and Wagner said in a joint statement. "It is about access, advocacy, and redefining what is possible when communities commit to inclusion."
"The theme of individuals working to make outdoor spaces more accessible strongly resonated with us," said BayView Entertainment President Peter Castro. "These stories matter, and they deserve to be seen."
