The framework centers on Narcissistic Supply, the recognition, attunement, and care every person draws from the people around them. Anna Frost, the psychoanalyst behind the practice, builds the page around a single premise: narcissism is not vanity or a fixed personality type, but what emerges when a person has not received enough of that Supply, beginning in infancy and continuing through adult life.

The page explains how the pattern develops. A child whose needs are noticed and met learns to settle into their own skin. A child met with inconsistency or emotional dismissal often grows up seeking validation elsewhere. In adulthood, this can present as a persistent need for admiration, fragile self-worth, and difficulty self-soothing. In Frost's view, none of this reflects a moral failing.
