S For Story/10660433
~ The City of Springfield has been awarded a $500,000 Brownfields Assessment Grant from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), announced by the Department of Workforce & Economic Vitality. This grant will allow Springfield to focus on site assessments and cleanup plans in targeted areas, strengthening its redevelopment potential.

The grant will be used to conduct 20 Phase I and 10 Phase II environmental site assessments, as well as develop four cleanup plans and two area-wide plans. Community engagement will also be supported through these funds. The target area for this grant includes the Chase Street Corridor and College Street Corridor in Springfield, with priority sites including a foundry complex, a rail yard, and a former auto sales and repair site.

Springfield Mayor Jeff Schrag expressed his gratitude for the grant, stating that it will give the city the ability to plan for the redevelopment of properties that have hindered economic progress for too long. He also noted that this funding will help address environmental concerns and align with key priorities outlined in Forward SGF.
