Brownfields Assessment Grant Awarded to the City of Springfield
S For Story/10660433
~ The City of Springfield has been awarded a $500,000 Brownfields Assessment Grant from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), announced by the Department of Workforce & Economic Vitality. This grant will allow Springfield to focus on site assessments and cleanup plans in targeted areas, strengthening its redevelopment potential.
The grant will be used to conduct 20 Phase I and 10 Phase II environmental site assessments, as well as develop four cleanup plans and two area-wide plans. Community engagement will also be supported through these funds. The target area for this grant includes the Chase Street Corridor and College Street Corridor in Springfield, with priority sites including a foundry complex, a rail yard, and a former auto sales and repair site.
Springfield Mayor Jeff Schrag expressed his gratitude for the grant, stating that it will give the city the ability to plan for the redevelopment of properties that have hindered economic progress for too long. He also noted that this funding will help address environmental concerns and align with key priorities outlined in Forward SGF.

Amanda Ohlensehlen, Director of Workforce & Economic Vitality for the City of Springfield, emphasized the importance of this grant in evaluating environmental conditions and creating a comprehensive brownfield inventory. She believes it will also aid in prioritizing area-wide planning and reuse strategies while bringing Forward SGF's vision to life.
The EPA's Brownfields program has been providing grants since 1995 to assess and clean up contaminated properties, returning blighted areas to productive use. To date, nearly $2.9 billion has been invested in brownfields grants, leveraging over $42 billion in cleanup and redevelopment. This has resulted in over 220,500 jobs from both public and private sources.
Cora Scott, Director of Public Information & Civic Engagement for Springfield, can provide more information about this grant at 417-380-3352. With this new funding from the EPA, Springfield is taking a significant step towards revitalizing its targeted areas and promoting economic growth.
