~ The City of Springfield has been awarded a $500,000 Brownfields Assessment Grant from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), announced by the Department of Workforce & Economic Vitality. This grant will allow Springfield to focus on site assessments and cleanup plans in targeted areas, strengthening its redevelopment potential.

The grant will be used to conduct 20 Phase I and 10 Phase II environmental site assessments, inventory brownfield sites, and develop four cleanup plans and two area-wide plans. It will also support community engagement efforts. The target area for this grant includes the Chase Street Corridor and College Street Corridor in Springfield, with priority sites including a foundry complex, a rail yard, and a former auto sales and repair site.

Springfield Mayor Jeff Schrag expressed his gratitude for the grant, stating that it gives the city the opportunity to plan for the redevelopment of properties that have hindered economic progress for too long. He also noted that this funding will help address environmental concerns and align with key priorities outlined in Forward SGF.

The EPA's Brownfields program has been in operation since 1995 and has provided nearly $2.9 billion in grants to assess and clean up contaminated properties. This has resulted in over $42 billion in cleanup and redevelopment investments. The federal funding has also leveraged over 220,500 jobs from both public and private sources.
