S For Story/10699894
BURGETTSTOWN, Pa. - s4story -- Ten school districts, intermediate units and foundations serving students in Pennsylvania and West Virginia will receive grants from the Chuckie F. Mahoney Memorial Foundation to provide programming to improve mental health and prevent suicide in the 2026-27 school year.
The Chuckie F. Mahoney Memorial Foundation is a nonprofit organization that seeks to empower students and parents with mental health resources and education. Each year, the Foundation awards grants to help schools provide more robust mental health offerings.
The Foundation increased the number of recipients from eight to 10 this year, while boosting most awards from $3,500 to $4,000. Originally focused on school districts in western Pennsylvania, the grant program is now open to all school systems in Pennsylvania and northern West Virginia.
The 2026-27 winners are:
Burgettstown Area School District
Bentworth School District
Intermediate Unit 5 NW Tri-County
Big Beaver Falls Area School District
Beaver Valley IU #27

Lake View School District
Glade Run Foundation
Governor Mifflin School District
West Greene School District
Weirton Catholic School District (awarded $3,050)
"We chose 10 recipients this year as we had so many good applications demonstrating significant need," said Foundation President Charles "Chal" Mahoney. "It's extremely gratifying to furnish the resources to provide crucial, potentially life-saving programming in our schools."
Chal and his wife, Debi, created the Chuckie F. Mahoney Memorial Foundation to help others by sharing their personal experience of losing their son to suicide. Chuckie F. Mahoney was a dean's list student at Allegheny College who dreamed of becoming a child advocate lawyer. Through the Foundation's work to help schools improve students' mental health, combat depression and remove the stigma for seeking help, Chuckie's legacy of assisting children endures.
Established as a college scholarship program in 2002, the Foundation has grown into a regional resource. The Foundation supports the Allegheny Health Network Chill Project, sponsoring its annual School-Based Behavioral Health & Wellness Conference which brings valuable mental health training to school personnel, and is a proud sponsor of the UPMC-Washington Hospital Teen Outreach program at Burgettstown Area School District, Chuckie's alma mater. The Foundation also supports Pittsburgh Pirates Charities and numerous organizations and events that bring visibility to mental health issues.
