Could a Long-Term Care Crisis Cost You More Than You Think?
S For Story/10704788
Les Robinson Helps Individuals and Families Understand the Often-Overlooked Tax Impact of Paying for Extended Care
AMHERST, N.Y. - s4story -- A long-term care event can create more than a healthcare challenge—it can become a significant financial and tax-planning issue for retirees and their families.
According to Les Robinson, CEP®, CLTC®, CRPC®, Certified Estate Planner, author, educator, and national professional resource on long-term care and wealth protection, one of the most overlooked questions is where the money for care will come from.
"Here's something most people don't think about," Robinson explains. "If your savings are held in a traditional IRA or 401(k), withdrawals may be taxable. For example, if someone is in a 24% federal tax bracket, they would need approximately $131,579 in taxable withdrawals to have $100,000 available after federal income taxes."
By contrast, benefits from a properly structured, tax-qualified long-term care insurance plan are generally received income-tax-free under current federal tax law. That means $100,000 of qualifying benefits can provide $100,000 toward care, subject to the policy's terms and applicable tax rules.

"When your health changes, you want as much of your money as possible going toward your care—not unnecessarily toward taxes," Robinson says.
Robinson encourages individuals to look beyond wills and trusts and evaluate how retirement, estate, tax, Medicaid, and long-term care planning work together.
Educational Seminar: Is Your Estate Plan Really Protecting You?
Robinson will address these issues in an educational presentation designed to help individuals identify potential gaps before a crisis occurs.
Attendees will learn how to:
"I believe knowledge is meant to be shared," Robinson says. "My goal is simple: share what I know, help people move forward, and give them something they can actually use."
