Last year, almost 90 percent of Canadians supported stronger plastics regulations, with 70 percent favouring a ban on single-use plastics. In the rise of the COVID-19 pandemic, support for more robust rules has fallen to 79 percent, while flat-out ban support dropped to 58 percent.

Amid a rallying environmental cry to reduce packaging, some experts say that wrapping certain foods in plastics or putting them in containers can actually reduce waste in the long run. Experts say grocers could set a standard size or weight for reusable containers that customers could bring and fill themselves for foods requiring some boxes.
