Feel Physics Advances Inquiry-Based Learning with XR Devices for "Proposal Skills Needed in New Era"
S For Story/10614676
Innovative Educational IT Startup Empowers Students at Kaishi Vocational University
MUSASHINO-SHI, Japan - s4story -- Feel Physics, a groundbreaking educational IT startup specializing in XR technology (Extended Reality), successfully conducted an XR experience and proposal exploration learning event for students of the Faculty of Informatics at Kaishi Vocational University in Niigata City on Thursday, December 14, 2023. This initiative aimed to equip students with the skills necessary to meet the evolving demands of the new era.
🔳 Fostering Forward-Thinking Abilities:
Encouraging students to anticipate changes in response to AI evolution, population decline, and the SDGs.
The economic landscape of Japan has faced challenges for over two decades, with industries such as consumer electronics and semiconductors falling behind international competition. As Japan navigates through population decline and social shifts, the traditional models of mass production and consumption may no longer be effective. Low rates of entrepreneurship may stem from a culture seeking stability over risks. However, viewing challenges as opportunities for pioneering can reshape perspectives. The fusion of the real and digital worlds, exemplified by XR, presents a frontier ripe for exploration. The younger generation, digital natives, possess the potential to drive innovation and redefine societal norms. To equip them for this task, our educational initiatives emphasize proactive thinking and proposal development alongside hands-on experience.
🔳XR x Inquiry Learning
The visionary human resource development course proposed by Field Physics, Inc. consists of the following five stages.
1 The lecture "Changing Education with XR" emphasized the benefits of integrating XR into physics education. Understanding science-based studies solely through mathematical formulas poses a significant challenge for many learners, especially as people increasingly feel detached from the sciences. XR offers a solution by visualizing physics concepts, lowering the initial learning hurdle, and fostering sensory understanding, enabling active participation in conventional classes.

2 In the Inquiry Learning session "What do you want to do with XR?", students explored potential applications of XR beyond mere usage. For information science students, learning XR involves creative thinking about its utilization. The goal was to deepen proposals through subsequent XR experiences, encouraging critical thinking and idea generation.
3 During the XR Experience, students utilized MR goggles (Microsoft HoloLens 2) to engage in hands-on activities such as making flowers bloom, interacting with floating objects, and drawing freely in virtual space. The immersive XR world delighted students, blurring the boundaries between reality and the digital realm, prompting lively exchanges of ideas on XR applications within their groups.
4 In the Lecture on the "Environment and Future of XR", students confronted the challenges of XR development, including developer shortages, training personnel, cost issues, and generational disparities in technology adoption. Feel Physics extended beyond lectures and hands-on experiences, prompting students to consider societal needs and challenges, thereby enhancing their digital human resource qualities.
5 The Inquiry Learning session "Deepening and Summarizing Initial Proposals" facilitated group discussions to refine proposals and encourage multifaceted thinking. Through process checks and idea presentations, students realized shifts in their thinking and gained confidence in their learning journey. The session provided opportunities for idea pitching and mutual learning among peers.
The class concluded with the hope that students would continue to learn with a goal in mind as they look to the future of XR.

In this study, for example, a student's initial idea of "using a running machine as a background" was changed to "using XR to analyze form and training by overlapping the ideal way of sports movement with oneself" as a result of repeated PDCA cycles. In order to make this kind of change happen, we always ask students to "think about the essence" during lectures.
We also try to motivate students to attend daily classes by giving them time to think about "what they should study" in order to materialize their ideas. As protagonists of the new era, our lectures provide a mechanism for students to learn independently.
Today, when we are inundated with copy-and-paste digital information and AI output, it is difficult to develop the "uniqueness" of individuals and groups. That is why we need to deepen and personalize the knowledge we gain with exploratory methods based on our own skills. And I sincerely hope that you will lead a rich life, realizing your ideas and leading society.
