Forty-Two Percent of US Internet Households Prefer an Electricity Provider/Utility to Deliver an App That Would Monitor Their Energy Usage
S For Story/10653247
DALLAS, March 13, 2025 ~ According to a recent study conducted by Parks Associates, 42% of US internet households have indicated an electricity provider or utility as their preferred provider for delivering an app to monitor their energy usage. This research highlights the continued demand for information and products that help reduce energy consumption at home.
The study, titled "Smarter Energy at Home: Intelligence, Coordination, Services," surveyed 8,000 US internet households and found that 61% of them believe their electricity costs are too high. This sentiment was consistent across all segments of consumers. Additionally, 50% of consumers actively work to reduce their energy consumption, while 36% feel they need help in doing so.
One interesting finding from the study is that saving energy is one of the top three reasons why smart home device owners coordinate their devices into "routines." This shows that consumers are increasingly interested in using technology to manage their energy usage.

However, the study also revealed that electricity providers are struggling with customer satisfaction, with a Net Promoter Score (NPS) of -25. This indicates a need for improvement in customer engagement and satisfaction.
To address these issues and discuss ways to optimize grid reliability and drive adoption of energy management programs, Parks Associates will be hosting its 16th annual Smart Energy Summit: Engaging the Consumer on March 25-26 in Dallas, TX. The event will be co-located at DISTRIBUTECH and will feature keynote speeches from industry leaders such as NRG, Savant, Southern Company, and Renew Home.
Daniel Holcomb, Senior Research Analyst at Parks Associates, believes that leveraging smart home technologies can help utilities shift and reduce peak energy consumption. "The huge and fast expansion of data centers for cloud computing and AI is driving unprecedented demand for electricity," he said. "This puts pressure on grid stability and resource management. The residential consumer market presents a key opportunity to enhance load flexibility and demand-side management."

Speakers at these sessions include representatives from APS - Arizona Public Service, Rheem Manufacturing, Schneider Electric, Duke Energy Corporation, Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA), TXU Energy, NRG, Resideo Grid Services, Universal Electronics Inc., ecobee, DNV, and Powerley.
