Spreading the Gift of Representation in Classrooms Across the U.S.
CONCORD, Calif. - s4story -- Hey Carter! Books is spreading the gift of diversity and representation in classrooms by launching an initiative that will give all children access to diverse books in a learning environment. In addition, Black and brown children will have the opportunity to engage with literature that is a representation of themselves. This initiative not only supports Black and brown children, but children of all cultural backgrounds to be able to engage in diversity at a young age. Connecting with CEOs and Founders of companies who have the same desire to empower children through diverse reading is how Hey Carter! Books plans to be most impactful.
Hey Carter! Books was founded in 2016 and is a Black-owned publishing company. Their mission is to provide representation of Black and brown boys in children's books. Thomishia Booker launched Hey Carter! Books after the birth of her son, Carter, as she was disappointed in the lack of representation in children's books. Hey Carter! Books focus on building self-identity and confidence in young Black and brown boys. Thomishia's work "Brown Boy Joy" was featured in the Netflix original series Bookmarks: Celebrating Black Voices featuring Jill Scott, Common, and Tiffany Haddish. She is the only self-published author among the cast of celebrities and New York Times Best Selling Authors.

"My primary goal for Hey Carter! Books has always been to ensure Black children feel seen and heard in everything they do. The main way Hey Carter! Books has done this, is through creating stories that Black children feel intimately connected to. As our youth head back into schools after a long stressful year, the need for representation in classrooms is imperative. My idea to launch this campaign is rooted in the need for access to diverse books for all children. This is about ensuring every child can see themselves when they walk into the classroom! This initiative completely warms my heart knowing that children worldwide will have books that look like them in school brings the biggest smile to my face" says Dr. Thomisha Booker, Author of Hey Carter! Books.
