New Jersey community leader and entrepreneur reflects on coordinated efforts supporting hospitals, frontline workers and families during the COVID-19 pandemic.
EDGEWATER, N.J. - s4story -- NEW JERSEY — October 2, 2026 — Israfil Demir, a New Jersey-based entrepreneur and longtime Turkish-American community volunteer, has participated in community service and humanitarian assistance initiatives in New York and New Jersey, including efforts to support hospitals, frontline workers and families during the COVID-19 pandemic.
During the pandemic, Demir served in leadership with the Turkish American National Steering Committee (TASC) and was involved in coordinating assistance to communities facing shortages of protective equipment and food.
Among the documented efforts was a TASC donation of 2,000 hazmat suits and 5,000 surgical masks to Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn,New York. Demir was also involved in efforts to help hospitals obtain protective equipment during the earliest and most difficult period of the pandemic. A published account of his community work describes coordination of PPE and hazmat-suit deliveries to hospitals including Saint Joseph's in Paterson, Capital Health in Trenton, Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn and Richmond University Medical Center in Staten Island.
Community assistance extended beyond medical supplies. Demir participated in food-assistance efforts intended to help families experiencing economic hardship during the pandemic. In 2021, Anadolu Agency reported that TASC had prepared 3,500 food packages for distribution during Ramadan and that Demir said the organization had reached 14,000 families with approximately one month's worth of food assistance during the preceding Ramadan.
The assistance involved cooperation among community volunteers, nonprofit organizations, businesses and public officials. The documented efforts included work with organizations and leaders in Paterson, Brooklyn, Staten Island and other communities in the region.
