ASHEVILLE, N.C. - s4story -- KayeDinero used to tell listeners exactly what was on her mind.

Now she would rather make them feel it.

Earlier releases including "Love Drug," "Pisces Virgo" and "No Expectations" featured KayeDinero rapping and placing her own words at the center of the record.

Her newer music increasingly does something different.

It leaves the words out.

"I realized I didn't always want to tell somebody what the song was supposed to mean," KayeDinero said. "Sometimes I want to create the feeling and let you decide what happened."

THE MUSIC DIDN'T GET LESS PERSONAL

For KayeDinero, moving toward instrumental production was not about having less to say.

She still writes extensively as an author and poet.

Instead, she began separating two forms of expression.

Her words could live on the page.

Her music could become atmosphere.

"A lyric can be very specific," she said. "Once I tell you the story, you're inside my story. An instrumental can become yours."

That shift has helped shape projects including Human Error, Kulture Metrics and singles such as "Appalachia," "French Broad" and her newest release, "Checkmate."

INSTRUMENTS BECAME THE CHARACTERS

KayeDinero says she has become increasingly fascinated by what individual instruments can communicate without a vocalist explaining the emotion.

Piano can create vulnerability. Strings can build tension. Percussion can create urgency. Horns can completely change the personality of a record.

Her instrumental influences include Hans Zimmer, Joshua Kyan Aalampour, Kenny G and violinist Josh Vietti.

"I love hearing different instruments enter and change the mood," she said. "That's the vibe for me. Sometimes the instrument is the voice."

Her growing interest in aerial cinematography has strengthened that preference.

Recent visuals for "Appalachia" and "French Broad" pair her original music with landscapes she filmed herself across Western North Carolina.

"Instrumental music gives the picture somewhere to breathe," she said.

NOT RETIRED FROM RAP

KayeDinero is careful about one distinction.

She has not declared herself finished with rapping.

"I still write. I can always pick up a microphone again," she said. "I just don't need words on every record anymore."

For now, she is enjoying what happens when listeners receive less explanation.

"Lyrics can be instructions," KayeDinero said. "Instrumentals are invitations."
