MIRA Safety Launches Science-Based Wildfire Spread Simulator, Its Third Free Preparedness Tool
S For Story/10705732
Conceptual model built on USDA Forest Service fire-behavior science shows how wildfires, a yearly threat across the U.S. and Canada, could spread across real terrain
AUSTIN, Texas - s4story -- MIRA Safety® has announced the launch of its free Wildfire Simulator, the company's third public simulator following its Nuclear Blast and Biological Infection Simulators. Unlike scenario tools built around rare events, this simulator addresses one of North America's most common recurring threats: wildfires that affect communities across the United States and Canada every year.
The simulator is a conceptualized, physics-based model built on the published Rothermel surface-fire spread equations used by the USDA Forest Service. It combines these equations with government data on vegetation, elevation, roads and structures from LANDFIRE, the U.S. Geological Survey, the U.S. Census Bureau and FEMA, covering all 48 contiguous states at 30-meter resolution. Its fire-behavior calculations were independently validated against the USDA Forest Service FireLab Behave reference across all 40 standard fuel models.

On the map, users can view active fires from NIFC and NASA FIRMS satellite detections, current air quality from EPA AirNow, and long-term wildfire risk. They can then drop an ignition point, set wind speed, direction and fuel moisture, and watch the model estimate how a fire could grow from one hour to one week, including simulated smoke and mapped structures within its reach.
This first release is a conceptual implementation that runs on preset, user-defined conditions. It lays the groundwork for the live fire mapping MIRA Safety is developing next.
"Wildfires aren't a once-in-a-lifetime event. For many families, they're a yearly reality," said Roman Zrazhevskiy, Founder and Chief Executive Officer at MIRA Safety. "We built this simulator on the same fire-behavior science used by federal land agencies so families can see how wind, fuel and terrain shape a fire's path, and build a plan before the next one starts."

The same hazards apply closer to home. Wildfire smoke carries fine particles and carbon monoxide, and household fires produce the same threats. MIRA Safety's CM-6M Tactical Gas Mask with VK-530 Smoke and CO Filters, also available in the Fire Escape Pro Kit, filters smoke, soot, particulates and carbon monoxide during both wildfires and residential fires.
The simulator is available now on MIRA Safety's website.
