Nina Simone's "Four Women" Inspires Artist To Create Immersive Colorism & Healing Experience
S For Story/10687569
HOUSTON - s4story -- Inspired by Four Women by Nina Simone, Houston-based artist Estee Marie is bringing a powerful new cultural experience to life. The Color of Us, taking place March 28, 2026, uses art, poetry, and immersive storytelling to explore the layered realities of colorism, identity, and healing within the Black community
Supported in part by funding from the Houston Arts Alliance, which is backed by the City of Houston, the project bridges artistic expression with community-centered dialogue.
As the experience developed, supporting research from the Kinder Institute for Urban Research at Rice University helped validate what many have long felt but rarely seen reflected — color-based bias continues to shape lived experiences across Houston communities.
Rather than presenting statistics alone, The Color of Us invites attendees to see, feel, and respond.
An Immersive Experience Rooted in Art and Truth
Guests will experience:
"This is more than an art show," says Estee Marie. "The research validates what some of us have been seeing and feeling for a long time. This is an evening where data becomes personal, where people feel seen, and where healing conversations can begin."

Why This Conversation Matters Now
Research continues to show that color-based bias influences social outcomes, including perceptions of safety, belonging, and opportunity. In a diverse region like Houston, these nuances often go unspoken—yet deeply felt.
The Color of Us creates space to address those experiences through creative expression, storytelling, and community dialogue.
