The grant is awarded through Lilly Endowment's character development portfolio, which supports organizations that foster positive character traits in adults and children. Through play, Playworks uses an evidence-based approach to help educators and youth leaders build qualities like teamwork, respect, perseverance, and joy, equipping them to intentionally cultivate these traits in the youth they serve.

Over the next five years, the Lilly Endowment funding will:
  • Enhance programming by embedding character development practices across Playworks' trainings for adults.
  • Advance evaluation and research to identify the most effective strategies for engaging educators and other adults in implementing Playworks' play-based practices.
  • Grow reach and visibility, supporting outreach to expand partnerships with schools, districts, community-based organizations, and donors.
