Soil Collection Ceremony for Robert Williams Presented by the Community Remembrance Project of Greenville, SC
GREENVILLE, S.C. - s4story -- Melissa Whiteford St. Clair poet and author of Home Work A Collection of Poems Sparked by One White Woman's Journey on the Matter of Race is pleased to announce she will be sharing spoken word as part of the program for the Soil Collection Ceremony for Robert Williams presented by the Community Remembrance Project of Greenville. The event is free and open to the public and will be held Saturday, August 20, 2022, at 11:00am at the Shady Grove Baptist Church, 140 New Shady Grove Baptist Church Road, Pelzer, SC 29669.
"As a newly onboarded member of the Community Remembrance Project of Greenville's Events Committee, it is an honor to share a poem for the Soil Collection Ceremony for Robert Williams," stated St. Clair. She continued, "I was watching the SCETV show "Go For It" and the host was standing in front of an intersection while highlighting tourist spots in Edgefield, SC. The crossroads were Lynch and Main, which immediately caught my eye and I tucked away to ponder. Five days later I awoke with the poem to match, "At the Corner of Lynch and Main." She concluded, "Doing social justice work is very personal and poetry as a processing mechanism is truly an unexpected gift from God."

On November 4, 1881, a mob of over 100 white residents from Greenville and Anderson counties kidnapped a Black man named Robert Williams from jail in Williamston and dragged him across the Saluda River. Mr. Williams, a husband, and father of two had been accused of assaulting a white girl without serious scrutiny. Presuming his guilt, the mob denied him due process and hanged him to a tree.
