Rising from Silence | Honoring Legacy and Hope on World Mental Health Day
S For Story/10705075
BROOKLYN, N.Y. - s4story -- Two Journeys. One Question.
What becomes possible when someone gives you something to hold on to?
Long before the world knew her name, a young Maya Angelou sat beside her brother Bailey on a train, traveling from St. Louis, Missouri, to Stamps, Arkansas.
That journey became part of the story of a woman who would inspire millions. Years later, Angelou would return to the rails in a different capacity, becoming the first Black woman to work as a streetcar conductor in San Francisco.
She did not simply observe history. She shaped it.
On Saturday, October 10, that story travels to Barbados.
Rising from Silence, the financial implication of slavery Heritage's World Mental Health Day celebration, will bring guests together at the Fairmont Royal Pavilion for an evening of reflection, connection, music, and hope, and to honor another woman whose first changed what others believed possible.
The Most Honourable Kerryann Ifill, Barbados' first President of the Senate to serve with a disability, expanded the possibilities of leadership for a blind woman. Her story, like Dr. Angelou's, reminds us that when one person breaks through a barrier, the path becomes wider for everyone who follows.

FISH will announce Ifill as the 2027 Horizon of Hope Award designee, recognizing her leadership in expanding opportunity, dignity, inclusion, and hope for people with disabilities.
Acclaimed Barbadian artist Llanor Alleyne will also unveil a work created in Ifill's honor.
TWO JOURNEYS. TWO WOMEN. ONE INVITATION.
The weekend begins at sunrise, facing the Atlantic, where silence gives way to Caribbean steel pan. Guests will tend the tree planted at Andromeda Gardens in Dr. Angelou's honor, a living reminder that legacy is not something we inherit and leave untouched.
We have to nurture it.
On Sunday, guests will board the train at St. Nicholas Abbey, following a route that echoes Dr. Angelou's childhood journey. As the train reaches Cherry Tree Hill, one of Barbados' most breathtaking vistas, the landscape becomes a metaphor: we may travel different roads, but none of us gets there alone.
And that brings us to the question:
Who helped hold you up, and who will be stronger because you chose to hold them up?
That question becomes the heartbeat of the 2027 Legacy Capacity Summit: Build Your Community. Become the Banister.
A banister does not carry the journey.
It gives you something to reach for when the path gets hard.

That is also the heart of mental health: connection over isolation, belonging over exclusion, hope over silence.
The Horizon of Hope Award will be formally presented at the June 2027 Summit.
Two journeys. One question. A weekend designed to remind us that the most powerful legacy may be the person who finds their footing because we were there.
Honoring of Kerryann Ifill & the Legacy of Dr. Maya Angelou
Their journeys reflect courage, resilience, and the power of breaking barriers. Through advocacy, accessibility, and leadership, their stories inspire generations to move from limitation to possibility and help build communities rooted in dignity, inclusion, and hope
"My wish for you is that you continue. Continue to be who and how you are, to astonish a mean world with your acts of kindness"
— Dr. Maya Angelou
