Small Choices, Big Conservation Impact: Celebrate National Reuse Day at Resource Central on October 20

Boulder nonprofit invites Coloradans to donate unneeded home improvement items and enjoy 20% off to support local conservation efforts.
BOULDER, Colo. - s4story -- Nonprofit Resource Central® is encouraging Coloradans to clear out clutter in garages, sheds, and basements this fall and give usable materials a second life in celebration of National Reuse Day on Tuesday, October 20. Community members can donate, shop, and save at Resource Central, 6400 Arapahoe Road in Boulder, where the Materials Reuse Home Improvement Center will offer 20% off in recognition of the conservation holiday.
Celebrated annually on October 20, National Reuse Day encourages waste diversion by keeping quality items out of landfills and in use in the community. As the seasons change, it's also an ideal time to declutter for a cause and help support local conservation efforts. Leftover landscaping materials, lumber, doors, windows, cabinetry, lighting, tools, and working appliances are examples of commonly accepted donations that may be taking up space at home and can help community members complete an affordable repair or renovation project instead of ending up in a landfill.
Resource Central makes it easy to give items a second life through its convenient drive-through donation lane, open Monday through Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Community members drive through the gate and stop under the green "donate" sign, where staff will help unload vehicles For larger or bulkier items, request a free donation pickup within a 30-minute drive of Boulder. Pickups typically take 5 to 10 business days to schedule, so those planning a cleanout are encouraged to request a pickup early. All donations, whether dropped off or picked up, are tax-deductible.

Shoppers looking for affordable supplies for winterization, home improvement, remodeling, and DIY projects can explore the Materials Reuse Home Improvement Center, open Monday through Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Reclaimed materials are already offered at roughly one-third of retail cost, and the National Reuse Day discount of 20% off makes it an even better time to shop sustainably. Inventory changes daily, and community members can sign up for the Monday Materials Alert newsletter to learn about featured finds and weekly specials.
"National Reuse Day is a great reminder that some of our most valuable resources are already right in our communities," said Neal Lurie, President & CEO. "When Coloradans donate what they no longer need and shop reclaimed before buying new, they conserve resources, keep quality building materials out of the landfill, and save money."
Through community and partner material donations, Resource Central has diverted more than 74 million pounds of reusable building materials from Colorado landfills through its Materials Reuse program. In 2025 alone, the program diverted more than 5 million pounds of materials, and more than 61,000 community members chose to reuse.
National Reuse Day is part of Resource Central's 50th anniversary year, marking five decades of empowering the community to conserve water, reduce waste, and live more sustainably.
