Sound-Based Artist Hayes Greenfield Bridges Spatial Jazz, Early Childhood Education, and Memory Care

BROOKLYN, N.Y. - s4story -- Acclaimed saxophonist, composer, and electroacoustic artist Hayes Greenfield is expanding the possibilities of how sound can be experienced—and who it can serve.

On May 15, Greenfield releases Painting In Sound, a groundbreaking immersive jazz recording on Sunnyside Records that places listeners inside a three-dimensional sonic landscape through binaural and spatial audio techniques.

But the album is only part of a much larger story.

Alongside his work as an experimental jazz musician, Greenfield has spent years developing Creative Sound Play, a method that uses intentional sound-making, listening, and silence to foster creativity, communication, and deep human connection. His book, Creative Sound Play for Young Learners, published by Routledge, explores how simple sonic exploration can support learning, mindfulness, and collaboration in early childhood classrooms.

The approach has gained attention in education circles, including collaborations with the National Head Start Association, where Greenfield shares ways teachers can integrate sound-based creativity into early learning environments.

Now he is exploring how similar sound practices may benefit older adults living with memory loss, dementia, and Alzheimer's, adapting Creative Sound Play for senior communities and memory-care programs.

"Sound is one of the most direct ways we connect with the world," Greenfield explains. "Whether through improvising music, listening deeply, or simply exploring silence, sound can spark creativity, communication, and meaningful connection at any age."

His new album reflects the same philosophy in a different form. Using spatial audio technology, Painting In Sound places listeners inside the architecture of music itself, with sound moving fluidly around the listener's head when heard through headphones.

The result is an immersive listening experience that blends improvisational jazz, electroacoustic composition, and cutting-edge spatial audio design.

For Greenfield, the connection between these worlds is natural.

"In the studio, I'm exploring how sound can move around us in three dimensions," he says. "In classrooms and community programs, I'm exploring how sound can bring people together."

With Painting In Sound arriving this spring and Creative Sound Play continuing to expand from classrooms to senior communities, Greenfield's work suggests that sound may be one of the most universal creative tools we have—capable of inspiring curiosity in young learners while also reaching people living with memory loss.
